Edmond Dentist Talks About Foods That Clean Your Teeth
In part one of this series (July 5th post) our Edmond dentist provided a list of 3 types of food that nutritional researchers have reported as being beneficial for teeth and help to keep them clean. When it comes to maintaining your summer smile we explained how whole grains, animal proteins, and raw seeds do their part. Today, our Edmond dentist is providing a few more foods that are also good at cleaning teeth.
Here are the next 3 food types we’ll talk about, today:
Most people know that milk, yogurt, and cheese contain calcium which is a main component for healthy teeth and bones, but did you know that cheese also contains cavity-fighting agents? In fact, cheese has phosphate in it to help balance the pH levels in the mouth while preserving tooth enamel.
The calcium and phosphate work together to produce saliva and kill off bacteria in the mouth and teeth.
Fruits And Vegetables
Crisp fruits (like apples) and raw, crunchy vegetables (like carrots and celery) can help remove plaque from teeth and even freshen the breath.
Vitamin A is also necessary for the formation of tooth enamel and can be found in foods such as:
- Sweet potatoes
Fruits that contain Vitamin C are also great for holding cells together, which works to prevent the breakdown of gums.
Studies show that fresh herbs like parsley, cilantro, and mint can help clean teeth and decrease odors caused by a buildup of bacteria. Chewing on the fresh herbs is considered best; however, dried herbs can be used in mouth rinses for a more subtle impact.
Our Edmond dentist hopes that this information has been enlightening for you, but our staff wouldn’t be doing their jobs if we didn’t point out the obvious in saying that brushing and flossing regularly are also very important in you want to maintain healthy oral hygiene.
In addition, our Edmond dentist would also recommend routine teeth cleanings and dental check-ups as they are a fabulous way to ensure you keep a bright smile.
