Edmond Dentist Recognizing National Dental Hygiene Month

Edmond Dentist Bringing Oral Health Awareness

The month of October is known by the American Dental Hygienists' Association as National Dental Hygiene Month. In this month we, at Wallace Family Dentistry, remind everyone to brush, floss, and rinse. Of course, our Edmond dentist encourages this hygienic behavior all the time, but bringing oral health awareness to attention is the goal.

A lot of people get busy in their daily lives and they don't always stop to think about how often they should brush their teeth, when they should floss, or whether rinsing is necessary. Just to spread some clarification, our Edmond dentist will be answering all three of those questions today!

Question #1: How often should you brush?

Edmond Dentist Answer: At the very least, it is recommended to brush your teeth twice daily. If possible, you could keep a toothbrush at work or have your child take one to school. This way it encourages brushing after lunch, too.

Question #2: How often should you floss?

Edmond Dentist Answer: Since it takes about 24 hours for plaque to start forming it's a good idea to floss at least once per day. If you are routinely flossing and brushing the recommended times per day you're going to have a better chance of keeping plaque from building up as you'll rid the space between the teeth of bacteria.

Question #3: Is rinsing really necessary?

Edmond Dentist Answer: Using a mouthwash as a follow up to brushing and flossing is great for a few different reasons. First, it leaves your breath fresher. Second, it can wash away any lingering bacteria or debris that wiggled free during your brushing or flossing routine. This can prevent the onset of gingivitis.

It’s National Children’s Dental Month!

Dental Awareness Health Month

You know something is deemed important when there is a day, week or month dedicated to awareness for it. With that being said, it just so happens that February has been deemed National Children’s Dental Month and a campaign is brought to you by the American Dental Association. This month-long observance is brought to light for the purpose of helping the public understand the benefits of good dental health to children and the adults in their lives.

National Children's Dental Health observances began with a one-day event in Cleveland, Ohio and a one-week event in Akron, Ohio during February 1941. The ADA held the first national observance of Children's Dental Health Day on February 8, 1949. By 1955 it became a week-long event. Later, in 1981, the program was extended to a month-long celebration known today as National Children's Dental Health Month. For 2016, the campaign slogan brought by the ADA is called “Sugar Wars”. The idea is to bring awareness about the damage of sugar on teeth.

Today, we’re going to give you a little information, based on medical data, about how sugar plays a vicious role in dental decay and what you can do to prevent it.

How Cavities Develop: According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, a persons mouth has hundreds of bacteria living inside, some helpful and others harmful. The harmful bacterias can feed on sugars you eat to create acids that destroy tooth enamel (the protective barrier on the outside of your teeth). Without the protection needed, teeth are left vulnerable to cavities.

How To Battle Cavities: Fight off the bacteria can be done using good, daily oral hygiene practices. Brushing your teeth with fluoride toothpaste, using mouthwash and flossing regularly can help in the fight against cavities, however; cutting down on your sugar intake is also a key factor. Eating more fibrous vegetables, chewing sugar free gum and drinking fluoride water are also good ways to keep your teeth cleaner.
