Edmond Dentist Encourages “Back To School” Teeth Cleanings

Edmond Dentist: Letting Your Smile Shine

As we head into the month of August there will be a lot of parents scrambling to get things prepared for their children to return back to school. Due to school starting again children will require a lot of supplies and many will worry about what they should wear. Of course, as the old saying from a famous movie musical goes “You’re never fully dressed without a smile.” That’s why our Edmond dentist is here to encourage teeth cleanings before the start of this new school year.

Not only does a clean smile give confidence to children, but there are several benefits to keeping up with routine teeth cleanings. Here are just a few things our Edmond dentist would like you to know:

  • They help prevent gum disease.
  • Plaque can impact cardiovascular health; therefore, cleaning plaque may reduce heart disease.
  • They help dentists spot potentially harmful diseases early (like cancer).
  • The dentist can also detect broken fillings or fractures with routine maintenance.

It’s the hidden plaque beneath the gums that can really begin to pose problems. While you may think that brushing and flossing alone can keep your teeth thoroughly clean it’s important to understand that our Edmond dentist has the ability to deep clean areas that are often missed by patients at home.

As an added bonus, many dental insurance plans cover cleanings so you can actually save money on dental expenses in the long run by taking advantage of your policy.

Our Edmond dentist would rather be able to help you maintain your oral health by keeping your teeth cleaned than have you worried about how you will pay. If you don’t have insurance and you want you or your children to have a proper teeth cleaning before the next school year begins, let’s talk about your payment plan options! We offer a flexible payment plan.

Dentist Edmond: Spring Cleaning Tips For Good Oral Hygiene

Dentist Edmond: Cleaning Rituals For Your Mouth

The warmer weather is approaching and many people will take the time to do some spring cleaning around their homes, but what about doing some spring cleaning for good oral hygiene? It's been a long winter season and there's no doubt that over the holidays people may have indulged a bit more than they normally do with too many sweets; the stuff that's not just bad for your body, but also bad for your teeth. Our dentist in Edmond decided now would be a good time to provide some much needed tips to help you get on track with cleaning rituals for your mouth.

1.) Buy A New Toothbrush: The American Dental Association (ADA) and our dentist in Edmond recommends that people should replace their toothbrush every 3-4 months. This is to be done sooner if you've experienced an illness as bacteria can live on the bristles. Additionally, if the bristles have frayed before the designated time frame, you toss it.

2.) Start Brushing And Flossing Regularly:
It's easy to forgo a routine when the holidays get you all in a frenzy, but now is a good time to re-establish your brushing and flossing regime. You should brush at least twice per day to maintain a healthy mouth, but don't forget about flossing! Plaque can build up under your gums if you're not flossing which can lead to periodontal disease. To avoid this, try to make flossing at least once per day part of your daily routine.

3.) Schedule A Dental Checkup:
If you haven't had a dental checkup in about six months then you're due for one! Our dentist in Edmond understands that visiting the dentist isn't always top priority for patients, but keeping a regular routine is important as it allows Dr. Mike Wallace to clean your teeth, perform an examination, and assess your teeth for cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, or any other dental health issues that may arise. Knowing these things quickly means that we begin treating the problems sooner.

Spring is a great time of year to motivate people to improve their quality of life at home and personally. Our dentist in Edmond hopes that you'll also take care of your smile, too. We hope to see you, soon!

Edmond Dentist- National Dental Hygiene Month

Edmond Dentist Recognizing National Dental Hygiene Month

Edmond Dentist Bringing Oral Health Awareness

The month of October is known by the American Dental Hygienists' Association as National Dental Hygiene Month. In this month we, at Wallace Family Dentistry, remind everyone to brush, floss, and rinse. Of course, our Edmond dentist encourages this hygienic behavior all the time, but bringing oral health awareness to attention is the goal.

A lot of people get busy in their daily lives and they don't always stop to think about how often they should brush their teeth, when they should floss, or whether rinsing is necessary. Just to spread some clarification, our Edmond dentist will be answering all three of those questions today!

Question #1: How often should you brush?

Edmond Dentist Answer: At the very least, it is recommended to brush your teeth twice daily. If possible, you could keep a toothbrush at work or have your child take one to school. This way it encourages brushing after lunch, too.

Question #2: How often should you floss?

Edmond Dentist Answer: Since it takes about 24 hours for plaque to start forming it's a good idea to floss at least once per day. If you are routinely flossing and brushing the recommended times per day you're going to have a better chance of keeping plaque from building up as you'll rid the space between the teeth of bacteria.

Question #3: Is rinsing really necessary?

Edmond Dentist Answer: Using a mouthwash as a follow up to brushing and flossing is great for a few different reasons. First, it leaves your breath fresher. Second, it can wash away any lingering bacteria or debris that wiggled free during your brushing or flossing routine. This can prevent the onset of gingivitis.

Aside from the basics, routine teeth cleanings are another fabulous way to keep your smile looking bright. As our Edmond dentist is an advocate for good oral health care habits, we hope that you consider yourself a little more aware either now or after visiting for an appointment. Get Stronger Teeth By Doing This

About The Strengthener For Teeth

Candy, ice, citrus, coffee and sticky foods are the stuff of nightmares for teeth. Chomping down on these types of foods will certainly increase the chance for more damage to be done and possibly cause your bright smile to diminish. Of course, brushing and flossing are always recommended as the fluoride in the toothpaste will help to fight off nasty cavity causing bacterias, but there is something even more protective that you can do. This “miracle” treatment will require a trip to the dentist, but isn’t your smile worth it?

So what is this “miracle” treatment we speak of? Fluoride varnishes, of course! When you visit the dentist you can request the fluoride varnish protection to be used so as to prevent tooth decay. Here’s how it works.

The fluoride varnish gel is typically a pale yellow color that is softly brushed on. It sets on the teeth quickly and starts working right away. The fluoride is important, because it enters the tooth enamel and makes the tooth hard. It prevents any new cavities form forming while also stopping current decay from getting any worse. If tooth decay is at the beginning stages, the fluoride is powerful enough to actually go in and repair the tooth.

Don’t you hate when you get some dental work done and almost immediately you get hungry or thirsty, but you’re too afraid to eat or drink anything? Well, the fabulous part about most fluoride varnish treatments is that you don’t have to wait to eat, but foods should be softer for the first day.

It’s important to note that some brands of fluoride varnish may cause some teeth to look even more dull than before the application, but this is only temporary. In these cases, after a full day of wearing the varnish (without brushing or flossing it away) you’ll be able to wake up, brush your teeth and reveal a brighter, shiny smile.

Are you ready to strengthen your teeth with fluoride varnish?
