Edmond Dentist Warns Of Swimming Pool Chlorine Damaging Enamel

Edmond Dentist Encourages Monitoring Pool pH Levels

When you think about cooling off from a hot summer day, it’s natural to want to lounge around in a swimming pool, especially if that pool is in your own backyard. What you probably never thought about was that if the chlorine levels in the water are not properly balanced, it could damage your tooth enamel. Our Edmond dentist is here to share more about the New York University College of Dentistry researchers learned of this information.

A few years ago, Dr. Leila Jahangiri, the clinical associate professor and the Chair of NYUCD’s Department of Prosthodontics, spoke out about the findings of homeowners attempting to maintain pools on their own. While it’s understandable that homeowners would want to save a few dollars by avoiding having to hire professionals to maintain their pools for them, it could be a dangerous decision. This choice has often led to improper pH levels of the water which according to Jahangiri “can result in irreversible damage to one's teeth.”

She also stated that “it is difficult balance to maintain home pools properly” and that “proper pool chlorine and pH levels need to be monitored and maintained on a weekly basis.”

Our Edmond dentist knows you might be wondering what lab work research could really prove, but rest assured it was not just an educated guess based on research conducted in a lab that brought Jahangiri to her conclusion. She had observed first-hand, in a 52 year old male patient, the effects of improper pH levels. He had extremely sensitive teeth, dark staining, and rapid enamel loss over a very short 5 month period as a direct result of his 90 minute swimming exercise routine.

So, our Edmond dentist would hope that before you go dipping into the cold, refreshing water in your backyard you’ll consider carefully how you plan to keep proper pH levels and maintain the chlorine regularly, for the sake of your dental health. Either that or swim somewhere you know it’s safe.

Should you feel the need to have a dental checkup and ensure that things are on the right track with your teeth, don’t hesitate to come and see our Edmond dentist. You may make an appointment with our Edmond dentist at Wallace Family Dentistry by calling 405-340-0411.

Dentist Edmond: The Possible Removal Of Wisdom Teeth

Dentist Edmond: When Wisdom Teeth Become Problematic

Third molars, also known as "wisdom teeth" are usually the last teeth that appear. The science varies on when wisdom teeth usually grow for most people. As our dentist in Edmond will tell you, the truth is it's just a matter of when it happens for you. Some people get one wisdom tooth at a time and at a young age, while some others get them both in adulthood. If you don't grow any wisdom teeth, then you have nothing to worry about as this is just something that doesn't happen for every person.

Do you have crowding?

It can be damaging when teeth start growing in if there isn't enough room for them to align properly. Even if they happen to grow in the upright position it's possible for wisdom teeth to push the existing teeth forward. This can force some teeth to overlap or appear crooked. In these types of cases our dentist in Edmond would recommend the removal of your wisdom teeth to prevent further damage.

Do you have impacted wisdom teeth?

Impacted teeth are named as such, because they are blocked from growing in properly. Often, these teeth remain below the surface of the gums and lie horizontally rather than in the upright position. This is most likely due to not having enough room to grow. Allowing an impacted wisdom tooth to remain as is promotes plaque and bacteria to build up which can lead to the development of cavities. Additionally, infections can occur making it a much more painful experience. Of course, our dentist in Edmond would recommend removal of impacted wisdom teeth for the safety of our patient!

When your wisdom teeth become problematic don't hesitate to give our dentist in Edmond a call. We look forward to providing the best dental care possible and getting your back to a state of comfort rather than pain.
